Description
kew blue painted tongue
Salpiglossis sinuata
Annual. Blue-violet flower in the shape of trumpet. 40 to 70 cm high. Suitable for container gardening. Pinch young plants to encourage a more compact growth habit.
Full sun, well drained and rich soil. Sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost. Sow on the surface. Seeds need darkness to germinate. 20 cm between plants.
Indoor sowing is difficult. Young salpiglossis shoots are very small and fragile. Growth is slow at first and requires good conditions. Does not like transplanting. Ideally, sow in multi-cells and thin out. Transplant only after proper acclimatization and when rootballs are holding firm. Direct sowing is possible after the last frost. Add a little seedling mix to the surface for best results.
Germination: 70% in November 2023
Ecological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.
