Lettuce Martina<\/strong>
\nLactuca sativa<\/em><\/p>\n

Batavia-type lettuce. Dark green leaves with red edges. Can become huge. Very slow to bolt. Excellent flavor. A rare lettuce grown in the province ofAlava<\/a>, in Spain’s Basque Autonomous Community. Martina is the name of the lady who saved this variety when it was almost extinct. Part of the Ark of Taste<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Full sun, part shade. Well drained soil. Direct sowing from 4 weeks before last frost date. Sow indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting. 6 mm deep. 30 cm between plants.<\/p>\n

Germination: 95% in December 2025<\/strong>
\nEcological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>
\nSeeds of Basque origin donated by Hugo Martorell of S\u00e8me l’Avenir<\/a>. In 2023, as part of his work, Hugo went to the Basque country to discuss, among other things, the protection of ancestral varieties with the Red de Semillas Euskal Herriko Hazien Sarea<\/a> organization. He brought back seeds of several varieties, including Martina lettuce. Artisanal seed producers are very rare and varieties are kept by gardeners who eat them.<\/p>\n
