Columbine William Guiness
Aquilegia vulgaris
Perennial. 1 to 1.30 metres high. Small, dark purple, almost black flowers with white corollas. Attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. Blooms from May to July. Does not bloom the first year. Resistant to deer. Makes beautiful cut flowers. Hardiness Zone 3.
Full sun to part shade. Well drained soil. Sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before last frost. Direct sowing possible in early spring in well-prepared soil. Sow on the surface. 30 cm between plants. Irregular germination in 10 to 30 days or more at 15-20°C. Stratification for 3 to 4 weeks can improve germination.
Germination: 60% in January 2026 (without stratification)
