Description
Tobacco Grand Blond
Nicotiana tabacum
Annual. Smoking tobacco. Height 1.30 metres. Broad leaves with slightly embossed edges. Dark pink to very pale pink flowers when older, giving an interesting contrast. Blooms from July to September, much appreciated by pollinators. A rare variety preserved by a Baie Saint-Paul family, passed on to us by Lyne Bellemare.
Full sun, well drained and rich soil. Sow indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Transplant when temperature is above 10°C. Protect young plants from wind at the beginning of the season. Sow on the surface: seeds need light to germinate. 30 to 60 cm between plants.
Germination: 85% in November 2025
Ecological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.
Note
All tobacco flowers work in the same way, fading over time to almost white. So the darker they are at first, the longer they will stay colored. Grand Blond tobacco has very dark pink flowers. This makes this variety perhaps more ornamental than others.
And you don’t need to smoke to grow tobacco! If you’re looking for an easy plant to please pollinators and your eyes, this is a perfect variety.
