Onion Ailsa Craig
Allium cepa
Spanish onion. Pale yellow, mild, sweet flavor. 8 to 10 cm in diameter, but can sometimes grow very large, up to 20 cm. Popular for the largest vegetable contests. Named after Ailsa Craig, a small island off the coast of Scotland.
Full sun, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Sow indoors in February or early March and transplant in mid-May. 6mm deep. 20 cm between plants.
Germination: 94% in December 2025

Beautiful giant onions! I mulch the onions with grass clippings to retain moisture. Too bad I can’t include a picture here. They are well worth growing!
