Sweet Rocket purple
Hesperis matronalis
Biennial. Native to Eurasia and naturalized in Quebec since 1860. Fragrant mauve flowers. 90 cm high. Does not bloom the first year. Abundant flowering in June and July in the 2nd year. Young leaves, flower buds and flowers are edible. Thrives in wooded, damp areas. Not invasive in dry, sandy soil. My favorite weeds, by Larry Hodgson.
Full sun to part shade. Direct sowing from May to July or indoor sowing in mid-April. Sow on the surface. 20 cm between plants. Hardiness Zone 3.
Germination: 76% in November 2025
