Description

Norfolk spinach
Spinacia oleracea

A very cold hardy spinach that is slow to bolt. Large, wavy green leaves. Good flavor. A rare variety developed in Quebec in the 1880s. Seeds purchased from Potager d’Antan (in french) in 2015, we’ve been growing it every year since. To facilitate germination, we recommend the refrigerator technique: Pre-germinate spinach for a fall harvest.

Full sun to part shade. Fairly shade tolerant. Well-drained, rich soil. Direct sowing in spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow in August-September for autumn harvest. 1 cm deep. 15-30 cm between plants. Germinates in 7 to 20 days. Germination temperature between +1°C and 20°C.

Germination: 85% in December 2024
Ecological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.
