Phaseolus vulgaris
Dry bean. Pole bean, needs a 2 meter stake. Pale green or white seeds. Harvest fresh shell or dry. Excellent flavour, thin skin and quick cooking. Shells easily. Old French variety, also known as Flageolet vert à rame. Very rare. 70 days to maturity.
Full sun, well drained soil. Direct sowing after the last frost or indoor sowing 10 days before. 2 cm deep. 15 cm between plants.
Germination: 91% in December 2025
Ecological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.
Note
I found this variety at Baumaux (France) in 2015. To my knowledge, it is the one and only variety of pole flageolet! There are pods of different lengths which, on drying, are of different shades, with white, pale green or slightly darker green grains. Is the real Soissons Vert only green? Were the seeds received from Baumaux mixed, and should they be selected? That’s something we must think about…
Not to be confused with the Soisson bean, also known as Soisson Gros blanc à rame, which is a runner bean (phaseolus coccineus).
