Note
The story begins in the catalogs in winter 2018. To find the best, you can’t grow just one. So we picked 5 promising sweet corn varieties to compare, in search of the famous corn like the one you find at roadside stands. We were very attracted by Adaptive Seeds ‘ description of New Mama Super Sweet corn, but we always have to check for ourselves. We also have to make sure it has time to mature its seeds in our hardiness zone 4.
We really liked it!
We had other plans for 2019, so we were able to put it into production in 2020. To avoid any risk of cross-breeding with the surrounding corn fields, we have to avoid flowering at the same time. We sowed in multicells and transplanted in mid-May, but a frost in early June killed more than half our plants. Our population was no longer large enough to ensure genetic diversity. So we ate it, filled our freezer and fell in love with it all over again.
In 2021, we were better prepared, with arches and several layers of floating blankets to protect our little plants from late frosts – and there were some! Cover, uncover, cover, uncover, whatever it takes. Of course, we planted a 2nd crop for ourselves, at a later date and with less management, because we can’t do without it anymore and there’s no question of eating your future seeds!
That’s how we’re bringing you New Mama Super Sweet corn, a new release to our catalog and an introduction in Canada, in January 2022, 4 years after we ‘discovered’ it in our sweet corn trial. It’s one of the first reproducible sh2 available, and if you want a good, stand-style sweet corn, this is THE corn you’re looking for.
