Cucurbita moschata
Elongated pear-shaped butternut squash, 5 to 10 pounds. Beige at maturity. Non-fibrous orange flesh, slightly juicier than Butternut. Very good sweet flavor. Suitable for both sweet and savoury recipes. 31 recipes from Sucrine du Berry (in french). Very productive plants, 5 to 8 squash per plant. Very good winter storage. Immature squash, dark green in color, are tasteful and can be used like zucchini. Naturally marbled silvery-white foliage. Creeping stems of 2 meters or more. A heirloom variety from the Berry region that has almost disappeared. Sucrine du Berry squash is part of SlowFood’s Ark of Taste. 95 days to maturity.
Full sun. Well-drained, rich soil. Direct sowing after the last frost or indoor sowing 2 to 5 weeks before. Protect young plants from insects. 2 cm deep. 60 cm between plants.
