Bean Grandma Nellie’s Yellow Mushroom
Phaseolus vulgaris

Yellow, fleshy pole bean, 12 to 15 cm. Excellent flavor. Mushroom-like taste when raw. Need a 2 meter stake. Grains can be eaten fresh shelled . A variety originally from Russia, grown in Saskatchewan since 1952 by Nellie Chernoff and passed on to her granddaughter. 60 days to maturity.

Full sun, well drained soil. Direct sowing after the last frost or indoor sowing 10 days before. 2 cm deep. 15 cm between plants.

Bought in 2010 from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, we’ve been growing it ever since. The mushroom flavor is very subtle when raw (it depends on you…). This is the fleshiest yellow bean we’ve tested. There’s no other like it. It is very productive and does not develop string quickly, so it keeps a long time in the plants and can be harvested even when very large. It fills up a plate fast! If you prefer small snap beans, harvest them when they are young and yellow-green in color. And if you prefer standard beans, opt for Monte Gusto instead.
