Description
Petite du Lac fava bean
Vicia faba
It is used to make the famous soupe aux gourganesa culinary heritage of Quebec. Harvest when pods are green and plump, hull, blanch for 2 minutes and remove the pale green skin. To use dry, let dry on the plants. Since 2004, the word ‘gourgane’ is a Quebecism: the French call it fève. About 1.20 meters high.
Full sun. Well drained and rich soil. Direct sowing 4 to 8 weeks before last frost. For better germination control, sow indoors in seed trays and transplant 10 days later. 3 cm deep. 15 cm between plants.
The seeds can germinate in cold temperature (4°C). However, they will germinate more rapidly at 24°C. It’s best to sow as early as possible, as fava bean flowers tend to abort in temperatures above 25°C. In the event of a hard spring frost, a cover may be necessary to protect young plants.
Germination: 99% in December 2024
Ecological seeds produced at Catherine’s Ornamental Garden.
